While some celebrities wore intricate bodices made entirely of mother-of-pearl or wood at Monday night’s Met Gala, Doja Cat opted for a more casual take on the evening’s theme with a mascara-streaked face and what can only be described as a wet T-shirt. The singer, who has never been one to play it safe on the Met Gala’s anointed steps — dressing last year as Karl Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, wearing a feline-nose prosthetic — took spectacle to another level at this year’s Vogue event in a soaked white floor-length smock from avant-garde designer Vetements. She left little to the imagination, showcasing the absence of any undergarments as the wet fabric clung to her body. To create the illusion of a wet gown, Doja’s team reportedly used hair gel.

Doja’s slime carpet look seems to be the finale number of a multiday parade of campy, nearly naked ensembles. Over the weekend, alongside Vetements creative director Guram Gvasalia, she was photographed in various states of undress across New York City: in a plastic wrap matching set smoking a cigarette, in a bed sheet and black thong shopping for diamonds, in a towel leaving her hotel, and in a human-size ziplock bag earlier on Monday. That’s certainly one way to pregame the Met Gala.

“I don’t really like to blend in,” she told reporters just before entering the gala. “I’m performing — it’s a show tonight.” Doja is, of course, not actually performing during the event but scandalizing viewers in a subversive attempt at stripped-down glamour on fashion’s big night out.
